Artist Marina Villasensor
Artist Mission Statement:To help the underserved communities in San Francisco by amplifying their stories through thoughtful imagery and art. I want every small business owner to understand that they are crucial to our community’s development and the general well-being of local members. Every business deserves to feel seen- and with my art I hope to convey the message of solidarity and empowerment.
Explain Why You’re A Good Fit for this Program? Although I may not have the proper credentials to support, art has been a passion of mine for almost ten years now. As a young Latinx woman, I understand the importance of community alliance among the underserved members of our city. I am also a fifth year student at San Francisco State University with a major in Liberal Studies and minor in Health Education. Art @ Work is a program that fits into my area of expertise because it provides support for the community at the individual level while also beautifying our neighborhoods for all. Although it may not seem like it, but programs like this are the backbone of Health Education because without support for our community members, it can cause unwarranted stress which will lead to a plethora of health complications over time. I would be more than honored to give back to my community with my art because it will create meaningful impact through both discourse and appreciation. My goal is to help storefronts feel acknowledged and to make sure that they are telling their stories the way they would like them to be told. I will highlight the diversity of our neighborhood while also making sure it does not disrupt what has already been established.
